How I left Marx.....
Last week I officially denounced Socialism. I cleaned out my collections of Marx, my posters of Che and my Propagandhi cds. I rid my life of Red and today I feel great. Do not get me wrong, I may have turned my back on my dreams but not my ambitions. History is a diverse and brilliant concept, it underpins the here and now, it defines our traditions, concepts and societal values. We are a product of our past and like wise, the past is a product of us. Throughout history we have created society after society, searching for the system that will succeed in offering universal liberty to both soul and pocket. This process has taken us through a vast list of epochs and systems such as: Feudalism, Aristocracies, Democracies, Capitalism, Totalitarianism; yet none of these have solved the puzzle of humanity's soul.
Every individual, man, woman and child, is in need of one simple spiritual and material aspect: recognition. We all want to be seen and treated as an equal; we yearn to be able to walk with our heads held high, not bowed to a 'superior' being. This is why all systems of the past have failed: Feudalism only recognised the land owners; Totalitarianism only recognised the party whilst Capitalism only recognises the owners of the means of production and a few others that have a 'use'. Therefore our current period will eventually end, it is written in History. The majority of this world sits frustrated, angry at the way they are treated, annoyed at the lack of respect they hold. The Bourgeoisie have created myths to try and hide these contradictions. The internet offers us online utopias; TV gives us a chance to become pop stars or super models, whilst the lottery feeds our dreams of unbelievable riches and ultimately, recognition. However these smoke screens cannot hide the truth for long.
Currently we reside in a situation where our governments are dwarfed by multinational corporations and of course, this has detrimental effects on our way of life. Last year the Prime Minster attended a celebration of global media tycoon, Rupert Murdoch. He (along with other leaders, politicians and activists) toasted Murdoch and gave thanks to his 'innovation' in media technologies. Not one person mentioned the way he sacked three thousand workers who dared call a strike in 1986, nor did they mention how he swayed a democratic election just to fulfil his ambitions. Please remember this event all happened whilst war was erupting in the Middle East, a region very much wanted by the massive oil and construction companies of the US.
It seems Capitalism is winning its war of ideology; however this creates an unusual paradox. Capitalism acts very much like a virus, or cancer. It needs to keep growing and expanding to survive, it must encompass everything. But like all viruses, it will end up with nothing else to take over; there will be no more new roads to explore, no more plains to cross. In its static state, Capitalism will crumble. The motor of investment and expenditure will eventually slow and have only war and sickness to exploit, two foundations that will lead to only revolution.
Therefore I am not a Socialist, my love and passion for radical change has died. I support Capitalism, Globalisation and the triumphant praise of Rupert Murdoch! Capitalism has reached its zenith but is not wise to the matter, I won't hinder it, I will help it instead. I am now a Liberal, swapping my colours from Red to Orange, my passion focused on free markets and Liberal rights. Today the sun is shining and a new day has started, the day where my own, personal revolution begins.
